What Is a University Entry Test?

A university entry test is a structured, usually MCQ-based exam. Universities in Pakistan use it to choose students for admission.

After matriculation and FSC, I realized this is the biggest problem for students. It applies to medical, engineering, computer science, and business studies students alike.

Most tests cover the same core subjects:

  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Mathematics or Biology
  • English
  • Analytical or Quantitative reasoning

The weightage, syllabus, and merit formula are different for each test. Thus, before any test, keep yourself updated about it.

Tip: Most of the tests carry a major portion of your FSC syllabus; thus, building stronger concepts on FSC concepts will help you a lot in cracking your entry test.

MDCAT – For Medical and Dental Admission

MDCAT is compulsory to get admission to an MBBS or BDS program anywhere in Pakistan. It is held once a year, and if you missed the last date once, you have to wait a full year for the next attempt.

The merit formula is as follows:
Matric = 10 percent
FSc = 40 percent
MDCAT = 50 percent.

ECAT – For Engineering Admission in Punjab

ECAT is the gateway to UET Lahore and other engineering universities. The test focuses on mathematics, physics, and chemistry.

The merit formula is different for different universities. Some consider FSC and entry test marks only, while others consider matriculation weightage too.

NUST NET – For NUST Islamabad

NUST NET, or NET, is a unique entry test, as it runs in multiple series across the year. You can attempt it more than once, and your best score is used for merit.

The paper has 200 MCQs and no negative marking, which makes smart guessing a valid strategy here.

NTS NAT – Accepted by Many Universities

NTS NAT is a general-purpose test accepted by dozens of universities. It has two main categories:

  1. FSC-based is further classified into 6 categories, like NAT-IE for engineering, NAT-ICS for computing, NAT-IA for arts programs, NAT-IM for pre-medical program, NAT-IGS for general science, NAT-ICOM for commerce programs
  2. BSC-based is further classified into 5 categories, like NAT-IIM for management science programs, NAT-IIA for arts programs, NAT-IIB for biological science programs, NAT-IIP for physical sciences, and NAT-IIO for Oriental and Islamic studies programs.

FAST-NU Entry Test

FAST-NUCES runs its own entry test for computer science, software engineering, and electrical engineering programs. Alternatively, the NAT and SAT entry tests can also be accepted. But you can choose only one test at a time.

ETEA – For KPK Engineering Universities

If you want to apply to UET Peshawar and related institutions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, you need to take the ETEA test.

SAT – For LUMS, GIKI, and Study Abroad

In case you apply for LUMS or GIKI, or you want admission abroad, you will have to prepare for the SAT. For medical and engineering programs, the MDCAT or ECAT score is applicable only.

Entry Test Date 2025 and Entry Test Date 2026

The entry test dates usually vary by each institute. Some entry tests occur in series. A general schedule of dates is given below:

Good entry test preparation is based on multiple things; it ranges from strong intermediate concepts to MCQ practice. Practicing the past papers will also be very helpful for you in cracking your entry test.

1: Know Your Test Pattern First

Before starting the preparation, particular entry test pattern information is very important; each institute has a different pattern for their entry test and subject weighting.

2: Build Your FSc Concepts

FSC concepts are majorly contributed to preparing your entry test. Thus, focus on your intermediate curriculum so that you do not face any hurdle on test day.

3: Practice Topic-Wise MCQs

Practicing the chapterwise or topicwise MCQs is also important in the preparation of a particular entry test. It helps you a lot with your preparation by giving you the practical scenario of the test.

4: Solve Full-Length Mock Tests

Once you have practiced the chapter-wise MCQs, you have to practice full-length book papers. It is recommended to spend almost the last week before the test on practicing the full book papers, as it will show you not only the exact scenario but also help you in managing your time according to the test.

5: Revise With Past Papers

Along with practicing the full book papers, practice the past papers of your entry test too; it will give you an idea about the questions you will be asked in your test, and you will be prepared for test day.

Entry Test Preparation MCQs PDF: Free Resources

The study material for an entry test has key importance, and I received a number of queries in this regard. Many PDFs of chapter-wise MCQs, full-book MCQs, and past papers are available online, and you can check them for free.

Entry Test Past Papers and Why They Matter

Solving and practicing three to five years of entry test past papers is the best way of effective preparation for an entry test. But it should be practiced just after the full book practice, as it will help you to grasp the proper sequence of the curriculum and to get the core idea of your syllabus.

Past papers help you in three specific ways:

  1. They show the exact difficulty level of the test.
  2. They reveal which topics are asked about in the test often.
  3. They help you manage time under real exam pressure.

  2. Look for the “Result” or “Roll Number Slip” section.
  3. Enter the required credentials.
  4. Download or screenshot your result for your admission file.

How to apply for an entry test?

As a student, I really know the issue about applying for an entry test. As when I was preparing for the entry test, I faced the same issue too. Visiting someone physically and asking them for applying help or to get their services is now old and time-consuming. Thus, I have come up with digital application assistance services to overcome this issue.
