Why Government Jobs Are Still So Popular in Pakistan
Sometimes we mostly hear about that there are no government jobs, or the new jobs in the government sector are now going to be ended, but it’s not one hundred percent true. Government jobs in Pakistan are still in demand due to the following reasons:
- Job security—these jobs are not announced now on a regular basis but are still offered on a 01- to 03-year contract with an expected extension in duration or regularization.
- Fixed pay scales—Salaries follow the BPS (Basic Pay Scale) system, so raises are predictable.
- Experience—Government job experience has more value as compared to the private sector.
- Opportunities for all education levels—from matric-based clerical posts to CSS-level officer positions.
The major issue with these jobs is now, most positions are offered with lump-sum salaries, providing no additional benefits.
Method 1: Apply Through the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC)

The Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) is the main body responsible for recruiting staff for federal departments—including the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Pakistan Railways, WAPDA, and the Central Superior Services (CSS).
FPSC is one of the most well-known methods for federal government jobs in Pakistan today, and it is managed entirely online.
How FPSC recruitment works:
- FPSC publishes a consolidated job advertisement (normally each month) offering vacancies from different departments.
- To apply, you will see the apply online button on the FPSC official website.
- By clicking this button, you will see two options; one of them will be the General Recruitment. Select this option and then click on Apply online.
- Now you will see the next option, where you have to select your desired position and enter your CNIC below it.
- A new screen will appear, where all the details of your selected job post will be mentioned. At the right bottom of this screen, you will see the confirmation button, “Apply for this job.”
- You will be led to a new screen; here you have to fill in all the required details. As the FPSC system is automatic, it will only accept those details that are required for the desired post. Let me explain to you with an example: if you are applying for the BPS 16 post and the required qualification is a master’s with second class, then this qualification will be automatically available here, and you can’t edit it, like you can’t make it a bachelor’s or third class. Similarly, if any quota is required, it will appear automatically, like if it is for a male, so only males will appear, or if any disability is mentioned, it will appear accordingly.
- After typing all the details, you have to revise all the information, whether you fill them correctly or not, and then you will write a verification code at the end.
- Click the generate PSID and challan button.
- The challan can be paid either on an ATM machine or through mobile banking or by visiting the commercial against the unique ID.
Pay the Fee:
- The application fee is different for each BPS level. Like, for BS-16/17 it is 600, for BS-18 it is 1500, for BS-19 it is 2500, and for BS-20 or above it is 3000 PKR.
- As you pay your challan, your will will come back again on the FPSC official website, and you can click on “Apply Online,” select your post, and enter CNIC again. The same screen will open where you already filled your data, with the message of your paid challan confirmation, and here you can edit your information too.
- As your challan is already paid, you will have a new button, apply for step 2, and the next screen will open.
- On this screen, you will see the new sections, which are basic info, education, research publications, and experience.
- Basic information includes your personal data like your profile photo, your CNIC reentry, your father/husband’s name, address, and mobile number.
- In the education section you can add your education up to 5 maximum; here again you can add only the education that is required for the post.
- The course and research publication section is not mandatory; you can add it if you have.
- If the experience is mandatory in the job advertisement, you can’t submit your application without adding your experience. If you have already paid your fee and don’t have experience, then your fee may be lost, as it is not refundable.
- In the experience section you have to add your designation, your BPS level if you had, your organization name, its status and nature of job, job date, and the duties you have performed during your work.
- You can add up to 5 maximum experience records and save them.
- Once done, you can submit your application now.
Who can apply: FPSC jobs differ from BS-14 clerical roles (open to intermediate/bachelor’s holders) up to BS-20+ officer positions requiring a master’s or PhD degree.
Method 2: Apply Through Provincial Public Service Commissions

Just like the Federal Public Service Commission, there are public service commissions that are working at provincial levels. These commissions manage recruitment within each province. Government jobs are normally open under these commissions in different provinces.
| Province | Recruiting Body |
|---|---|
| Punjab | Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) |
| Sindh | Sindh Public Service Commission (SPSC) |
| Khyber Pakhtunkhwa | KPK Public Service Commission (KPPSC) |
| Balochistan | Balochistan Public Service Commission (BPSC) |
In Azad Jammu and Kashmir, the AJKPSC is working for the same purpose.
How PPSC recruitment works:
- PPSC publishes numbered advertisements (normally each month) through its official website and major newspapers like The Jang/Express/The Nation.
- Vacancies are open across various departments such as Punjab Police, Health, Education, and general administration.
- The application for the Punjab Public Service Commission is totally online and as follows:
- Visit the PPSC official website and click on the apply online button, and all opened vacancies will appear.
- Now select your desired post here; the pop-up window with important instructions and ePay user manual instructions will appear here. You have to check the boxes and then click on the button “Proceed.”
- Then click the apply online button and enter your CNIC and click on proceed.
- On the next screen, you have to enter your contact information, including your mobile number and email address, following the clicking on the Proceed button.
- The proceed button will take you to a screen where you will verify your contact number and the email address.
- After verification on the next screen, you will add the details like gender, date of birth, employment status, and disability status.
- Then click on the save information button. An acknowledgement message will appear; click on the proceed button for the next steps.
Payment Method:
- Now your PSID (Payment System Identifier Number) will be visible. Against this PSID you can submit the fee through the ATM, any mobile banking application, or by the banks where cash payments against the PSID are accepted. The payment for each post is 600.
- Once the payment completion, now you have to upload your documents, which include your CNIC and photo, and then add your educational and experience information.
- Next the undertaking box will appear; check the box, and the application submission button will be active.
- After the submission, you can still edit your application.
Method 3: FIA and Other Ministry Job Applications
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) is a separate federal law-enforcement body that regularly announces large recruitment drives; thus, a number of students apply here—especially among matric and intermediate students.
How FIA recruitment works:
- FIA vacancies are open through its recruitment portal on the NPF Testing & Assessment Services (NPFTAS) system
- This NPFTAS has three steps i) Create your account ii) Complete your profile iii) Apply for the job
Application Procedure:
i) To create an account, you have to just click on the top right. Click the sign-up button, fill in the details, including your CNIC, mobile number, email, password, and confirmation, and then click on create account. After creating, you have to simply log in using the same CNIC and password.
ii) On successful login, your dashboard will be open, where you have to complete your profile. The profile completion includes you uploading your photo and your personal, educational, and experience details. In personal information, you will add your name, date of birth, address, mobile number, email address (mobile and email will be the same as you used when creating the account), marital status, gender, and religion. In education details, you will write about your degree, IOT’s name, this year, passing date, marks, and institute. In experience records, you will write about experience. If the experience is mandatory for a job in advertisement, then you can’t apply without the experience, as you have to write about the department type, its name, designation, and starting and ending dates.
iii) Now move to the open applications section. In this section you have just clicked on the apply now button in front of your desired post, selected your physical test center (if applying for a uniform post), and filled the box about age relaxation.
Now your PSID will be accessible, which you have to pay through mobile banking, ATM, or any bank. The amount of Rs 2000 is the application fee for each post.
Method 4: Ministry Jobs Applications
Jobs in ministries are available at the national job portal (NJP). You can directly visit the NJP website and search for any job and apply here. The application is really simple here. You just need to create your account by using your CNIC, and once created, you have to complete your profile. By completing your profile, your CV will be prepared. Now you will go to the Browse job option on the left-side menu, and here all the open jobs will appear. You will be told about whether you are eligible or not on the basis of your resume. If eligible, then your apply button will be active, and you can successfully apply for your desired job.
Method 5: Use Testing Services (NTS, PTS, OTS) for Matric-Base Jobs
Not every government job goes through FPSC or a public service commission directly. Many departments outsource their written tests to independent testing services; it includes mostly the admissions tests, job tests, and interviews.
The main testing services include:
- NTS (National Testing Service)
- PTS (Punjab Testing Service)
- OTS (Open Testing Service)
Let’s see them one by one.
NTS (National Testing Service):

NTS is mainly applicable at different university admission tests, like Air University and Shiffa Tameer I Millat University. The application is also similar to others and as follows:
- Visit the NTS official website and click on Open Applications.
- All the open tests will appear here. On the right side of each test, you will see a details button; click on it, and a pop-up window detailing will be open. At the end of this pop-up window, you will see an apply button.
- Click on that apply button and sign up by entering your first and last name, CNIC, email, mobile number, and OTP you received on your entered mobile number.
- Then the NTS dashboard will be open; you have to complete your profile by using the update profile option, where you will give your personal details and your qualifications and experience if required.
- Now at the end of the menu, there will be the open application option; you need to click on it, and a list of open test applications will appear. Click on your desired test, then fill out the required information, which will be about your family information and test city. Fill them out and click on apply to proceed.
- Now the screen with the fee challan will open; you have to print out the challan and pay it.
- Once the fee is paid, print out the application and send it to the relevant authority if required.
PTS (Punjab Testing Service):
Punjab Testing Service is also a testing service provider through which you can apply for any job and give your test. The application procedure on it is also very simple and as follows:
- Visit the PTS registration link and create your account by using your name, email, CNIC, phone number, and password.
- After creating your account, log in now, and you can apply within 3 steps.
- First of all, you need to complete your profile by filling in the personal, educational, and professional (experience) information; you can’t apply without completing your profile.
- After the profile completion, you will click on the apply button on the top menu and then apply here on your desired post.
- Once applied, now you have to download your challan and pay it according to the given instructions.
OTS (Open Testing Service):
The third entrance test platform is Open Testing Service for many jobs; the application process on OTS is as follows:
- Create your account and then log in; after logging in, your dashboard will open.
- You need to move towards browser jobs; here you can check your favorite job and click on the apply button.
- Now you will see different sections like payment, personal information, academic, professional, photo upload, and additional information.
- You need to fill out all your information, and after paying the fee, you can successfully submit your application.
